The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the Department for Environment, Agriculture and Rurals Affairs (Defra) have jointly commissioned a research project to explore the potential benefits from increasing resource efficiency across UK industry. Please find attached the invitation letter from DESNZ and Defra explaining the background and objectives for this research.
The research will consist of a comprehensive literature review to gather the latest academic evidence on the research objectives, followed by two half-day facilitated workshops with a range of sector experts from academia and industry. The aim of these workshops is to test the findings of the literature review with expert stakeholders and to fill any remaining evidence gaps.
Given your extensive expertise in the aluminium sector, and the importance of using materials such as aluminium for key resource efficiency measures in the vehicles sector (such as light weighting), we have identified you as a valuable participant in this research. We would like to invite you to attend both of these workshops which be held virtually via MS Teams.
- Workshop 1: 15th March 9am-11am
- Workshop 2: 29th March 9am-11am
These workshops will seek to test the findings emerging from a review of the literature and to facilitate a discussion for building consensus on the following points:
Workshop 1:
- Establishing a comprehensive list of resource efficiency measures for your sector.
- Estimating current and maximum levels of efficiency for each of these measures.
Workshop 2:
- Estimating how levels of efficiency for each of these measures would be expected to change in the absence of further government intervention.
- Understanding drivers and barriers to improving resource efficiency in your sector.
Note, the purpose of these workshops is not to develop resource efficiency policy proposals.
Expert contributions during the workshops will be analysed and synthesised in a sectoral report that will be shared with DESNZ and Defra. With the consent from all participants, workshops will be videorecorded. The sole purpose of the videorecording is so a transcript can be produced, allowing for an in-depth analysis of the discussions. Your contributions will be anonymised and treated confidentially, and it will not be possible to attribute your comments or opinions in any subsequent reports or publications. More detail on how personal data will be used and stored can be found in the attached data privacy notice.
Action required
We ask that you please reply to this email and to let us know:
- Are you interested in participating in this research by attending the two workshops and contributing with your expertise?
- Do you consent to the use and storage of your personal data as per the attached privacy notice?
Should you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us.
