Government has confirmed a UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) will replace the UK’s participation in the EU ETS from 1 January 2021. The UK ETS provides continuity for their customers and their operational activities and is a cornerstone of UK policy to meet ambitious and legally binding greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.

The measure is set out in the press release: UK Emissions Trading Scheme

The Environment Agency are currently consulting on charges to support their UK ETS activities to ensure these remain fully and sustainably funded. In addition, they expect to expand their current activities to include up to 350 new aviation operators in 2021.

It has been a long and challenging period of uncertainty but this decision is a really positive signal for the future of our climate change work.
