The UK manufacturing sector is the backbone of our economy, contributing billions to GDP, providing hundreds of thousands of jobs, and driving innovation in engineering, technology, and sustainability. Despite this, our industry lacks dedicated representation at the highest level of Government.

This is why ALFED is backing the petition to appoint a Manufacturing Industry Champion in Government, ensuring that manufacturing businesses—large and small—have a strong and knowledgeable voice advocating for their needs.
The petition, which is now live, calls for the Government to appoint a highly experienced industry expert to champion manufacturing across policy areas, driving the growth, resilience, and competitiveness of UK businesses.
Why This Matters to UK Manufacturing and Aluminium
The UK aluminium sector is a key pillar of the manufacturing landscape, underpinning industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, defence, and packaging. Yet, despite its strategic importance, manufacturing policy is often fragmented, with decisions being made without direct industry representation in Government.
A dedicated Manufacturing Industry Champion would work to:
- Stimulate demand, economic growth, and job creation
- Strengthen SME supply chain resilience and crisis management
- Drive investment in education and skills development
- Support innovation, R&D, and technological advancement
- Improve access to international trade and export opportunities
- Ensure sustainability and regulatory clarity for green manufacturing
With global trade challenges, US tariff threats, and the race to Net Zero, it has never been more important to strengthen UK manufacturing policy. Without coordinated support, businesses risk being left behind in an increasingly competitive global economy.
What Can We Achieve?
If the petition reaches 10,000 signatures, the Government must respond. At 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for a Parliamentary debate. This is an opportunity to put the needs of UK manufacturing at the forefront of political discussions.
A dedicated Manufacturing Industry Champion would be a game-changer, bringing direct engagement between industry and Government to develop policies that enhance manufacturing resilience and long-term growth.
Time to Take Action
We urge all ALFED members, and the wider UK manufacturing industry, to sign the petition and spread the word.
