The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) have recently been proud to announce Aluminium Federation (ALFED) member, Hydro Wrexham as the first-ever Gold Award Associate Supporters from North Wales.
This significant level of support will enable the DofE charity in Wales to further develop its work with more marginalised young people in North Wales and Wrexham.
It hasn’t been the easiest few years for young people. From the ongoing aftermath of the pandemic to the anxieties of the cost-of-living crisis, the future doesn’t always feel certain. However, in the near seven years that the DofE Award has been running, the one repetitive piece of evidence that has been uncovered, it’s to never doubt what young people can do. When young people are given the chance to prove themselves, there’s no limit to what they can achieve. The DofE Award exists to champion and celebrate every young person; providing a safe and secure environment of support and challenge that evolves as they do.
Whatever their ability, interest or background, DofE offers young people the chance to strive for achievement, overcome obstacles, and set their minds to a personal challenge. Because when you prove to yourself that you’re ready for anything, nothing can hold you back. The Award Founder HRH Prince Philip once said: “There is more in you than you might think.” And, at the DofE, they help you realise that.
Senior Relationships Manager at the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Ian Gwilym said- “This really is fantastic news to announce our first ever Gold level supporter in North Wales. The DofE is more relevant to young people today that what it has ever been, and Hydro’s support will enable us to extend the reach of the programme to more young people who may be facing financial barriers or marginalisation to take part”.

Barry Salisbury, Managing Director of Hydro Wrexham, also commented: “Business cannot succeed in societies that fail. Everyone at Hydro Wrexham is incredibly proud to be the first Gold Level Sponsor of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in North Wales. At Hydro, we believe in the power of investing in our youth, build skills for the future and supporting initiatives that develop stronger, more resilient communities. The DofE program aligns perfectly with our values. Together we will work to make a positive difference for young people in Wrexham and North Wales.”
