The UK Government has announced a new £50 million package of investment to strengthen domestic critical minerals supply chains, improve economic resilience and reduce reliance on imported materials.

The funding, announced as part of the Government’s ongoing Critical Minerals Strategy, will support projects focused on extraction, processing, recycling and supply chain development, helping to secure the materials required for advanced manufacturing, defence, clean energy technologies and economic growth.

For the aluminium sector, the announcement represents another significant step in the growing recognition of aluminium as a strategically important material for the UK’s future economy.

Aluminium Recognised as a Critical and Growth Mineral

In 2024, aluminium was formally included within the UK’s Critical Minerals Strategy and identified as both a Critical Mineral and a Growth Mineral under the Government’s Vision 2035 framework.

This recognition followed several years of engagement between ALFED, Government departments and industry stakeholders, during which ALFED consistently advocated for aluminium’s inclusion on the basis of its importance to UK manufacturing, national resilience, economic growth and supply chain security.

Through consultation responses, ministerial engagement, policy papers and wider industry advocacy, ALFED worked to highlight aluminium’s essential role across defence, aerospace, automotive, construction, packaging, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, alongside its unique contribution to the circular economy.

The inclusion of aluminium within both the Critical Minerals and Growth Minerals lists represented a significant milestone for the sector and reflected a growing recognition within Government that aluminium should be viewed not simply as a commodity material, but as a strategic enabler of industrial competitiveness, decarbonisation and economic resilience.

Why This Announcement Matters

The Government’s latest investment package places significant emphasis on strengthening domestic capability, improving supply chain resilience and increasing investment in recycling and processing infrastructure.

These priorities align closely with many of the areas ALFED has championed on behalf of the aluminium industry.

The UK aluminium sector contributes approximately £9.4 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the economy and supports thousands of highly skilled jobs across recycling, casting, rolling, extrusion, finishing and fabrication activities.

At the same time, aluminium is one of the strongest examples of a circular material economy. Aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without any loss of performance, with recycled aluminium requiring only around 5% of the energy needed to produce primary metal.

As policymakers increasingly focus on resource security, domestic capability and industrial resilience, aluminium is uniquely positioned to contribute to all three objectives.

Recycling as a Strategic Resource

One of the most important developments in recent policy discussions has been the growing recognition that recycling should be viewed as a source of strategic supply.

Historically, critical minerals policy has focused heavily on mining and primary production. However, ALFED has consistently argued that recycling, remelting and secondary material processing must also form a central part of the UK’s long-term resource security strategy.

The ability to recover, process and remanufacture materials domestically reduces reliance on imports, strengthens supply chain resilience and helps retain economic value within the UK economy.

For aluminium, this creates significant opportunities to strengthen domestic manufacturing whilst supporting both industrial growth and net zero ambitions.

What ALFED Will Continue to Champion

Whilst the latest announcement is welcome, ALFED believes there remains a significant opportunity to strengthen the role of aluminium within future critical materials and industrial strategy discussions.

As Government develops the next phase of its Critical Minerals Strategy and wider Industrial Strategy, ALFED will continue to advocate for:

  • Greater recognition of recycling and secondary materials as strategic sources of supply.
  • Investment in UK recycling, remelting, sorting and advanced processing capability.
  • Policies that encourage domestic value retention and circular manufacturing.
  • Recognition of aluminium’s role in defence, infrastructure, energy transition and industrial resilience.
  • Improved alignment between critical minerals policy, industrial strategy, trade policy and manufacturing competitiveness.
  • Support for innovation and investment across the aluminium value chain.

Looking Ahead

The Government’s latest announcement reflects a broader shift towards recognising the importance of resilient supply chains, domestic processing capability and strategic materials.

The inclusion of aluminium within the UK’s Critical Minerals Strategy was a significant achievement for the sector and demonstrates the value of sustained industry engagement and evidence-based advocacy.

ALFED is proud to have played a leading role in championing aluminium’s strategic importance and will continue working closely with policymakers, industry partners and members to ensure that this recognition translates into practical support for domestic manufacturing, recycling, investment and long-term competitiveness.

As these policy developments continue to evolve, ALFED will keep members informed of relevant funding opportunities, consultations and engagement activities.
