The Government is intending to consult later this year on a range of carbon leakage mitigations options which will include product standards and a CBAM. The government’s announcement on such intentions can be found at the following link:  published

Meanwhile, the EU are pursuing implementation of a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which is currently going through the European Council. This would impose charges on imports to the EU, aiming to protect against carbon leakage. One of the sectors in scope of the EU CBAM is aluminium. Currently, the EU are  aiming for an initial implementation date of January 2023 (emissions reporting), although this will be a phase-in period, with the policy (certificates/compliance) taking full effect in 2026.

We would welcome your views on the EU CBAM, particularly re potential risks that this may pose for your business. Your intel is vital in helping the Government present a more accurate assessment. Let us have your views by Thursday 16th June – email us: alfed@alfed.org.uk
