The UK Government has launched a new consultation inviting UK businesses to submit views on the impact of the United States’ Section 232 tariffs on aluminium and steel exports. The consultation also seeks feedback on the UK’s current rebalancing measures and how future trade policy could better support British manufacturers.

Introduced in 2018, the Section 232 tariffs saw the US impose a 10% duty on UK aluminium products and 25% on steel, citing national security concerns. In response, the UK applied a range of retaliatory tariffs on selected US goods, including whiskey and motorcycles. These measures have remained in place as bilateral negotiations continue.
The Department for Business and Trade is now reviewing the UK’s approach and asking for input from industry stakeholders. Businesses are encouraged to share evidence on:
- The ongoing commercial impact of the US tariffs on UK aluminium and steel exports
- The effectiveness of the current UK rebalancing tariffs
- Alternative measures that may better support UK industrial and trade interests
This is a vital opportunity for UK aluminium producers, processors, and exporters to help shape future trade strategy and ensure the Government fully understands the operational and competitive challenges faced by our sector.
We encourage all members with direct or indirect exposure to US markets to share their views and experiences with us by Friday 10 May 2025, to be included in our industry submission.
???? The official consultation deadline is 15 May 2025.
???? Full consultation details are available on GOV.UK

Together, we can ensure the UK aluminium industry continues to have a strong voice in future trade policy.
