The Aluminium Federation (ALFED), in partnership with innovation funding specialists Leyton, is excited to launch the first edition of a new monthly campaign to help members uncover opportunities for R&D Tax Relief.

R&D Tax – Unlocking Hidden Value in Metals Manufacturing with Leyton  - The Aluminium Federation

This month’s focus: R&D in Metals Manufacturing

The UK’s metals manufacturing sector is a hotbed of innovation—yet many companies are missing out on valuable R&D tax incentives. Whether you’re optimising processes, integrating robotics, developing new alloys, or creating bespoke metal tooling—you could qualify.

Possible areas of R&D activities in metals manufacturing include:

  • Design and development of metalworking machinery with improved functionality, such as enhanced forming, cutting, or joining capabilities.
  • Reducing waste through innovations in metal processing equipment or refining manufacturing processes.
  • Integrating advance manufacturing techniques, including automation and robotics, into complex metal fabrication.
  • Creating bespoke tools and dies for metal forming, extrusion, casting, or machining.
  • Developing precision machinery or processes for new metal alloys or materials.
  • Minimising environmental impact through alternative processes or sustainable materials.
  • Scaling up production or improving precision using advanced machinery and technology.

On the other hand, Leyton helps you identify projects that go beyond routine work and meet HMRC’s criteria for genuine scientific or technological advancement.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Leyton to support our members in recognising their innovation potential,” said Nadine Bloxsome, ALFED CEO. “This initiative will help businesses not only strengthen their technical capabilities but also recoup costs through R&D tax relief.”
