Vertik-Al’s annual colour audit has shown that 2024 was dominated by neutrals and various shades of grey, especially warm greys.

Khaki Grey, Moss Grey, Silk Grey and Pebble Grey all rank in the company’s top 20 most used powder colours 2024. Unlike the perennially popular Anthracite Grey, Basalt Grey, Slate Grey and Black Grey, these greys are much softer. Warm and calming, they work particularly well in spaces with good natural light and are enriched by sunlight. Their increased use suggests the cool grey trend may be in decline!
Speaking about the move to warmer shades of grey, John Park-Davies, group managing director for Vertik-Al said: “Those who follow our journey will know that Anthracite Grey in a matt finish has been a firm favourite for several years now. However, while there was no change in 2024 and it remained our most popular powder colour, we also saw a distinct shift towards more delicate greys for the first time.”
Regaining neutral ground
The popularity of warm greys is complemented by a rise in the use of black and white coloured powders. “These neutral tones have slowly been regaining ground over the past couple of years,” continues, John, “…and they now account for 11 of our top 20 most applied powders.”
Jet Black, HIPCA White, Signal White, Pure White, Signal Black and Traffic White all feature. HIPCA White is also the only top 20 powder to feature in both matt and gloss finishes.
Super-durables
2024 was also the first time that a Class 2 super-durable powder colour entered the top 20 – Interpon D2525 Matt in Anthracite Grey. “Over the next few years, we expect to see more high-ranking super-durables as they become more widely specified,” continues, John. “We have decades of coating experience using super-durables and as a result we can confidently offer extended warranties on these Class 2 powders.”
Metallics
Anodic Bronze and Anodic Steel Bronze metallic effect powders have been popular for some time, but last year, Vertik-Al added another to the list – Anodic Champagne. Just like the shift from cool to warm grey tones, this metallic is far warmer than either Anodic Bronze or Anodic Steel Bronze and underpins the changing trend.
Farrow & Ball
Vertik-Al is the UK’s largest independent powder coater and applies thousands of different colours, textures and finishes each year. Away from its most popular colours, the company also uses smaller quantities of more interesting colours and finishes, including, last year, a request to colour match one of Farrow & Ball’s Traditional Neutrals – No.4 Old White.
“Overall, 2024 was the year of the warm grey, concludes, John. “As we move on with 2025, we are excited to see what colour innovations await us. Maybe this will be the year that Anthracite Grey is toppled off the number one spot!”
