A commitment to UK-based manufacturing has led to a Kent firm being recognised as an industry leader in environmental practices.

AliDeck, the manufacturer of Made in Britain certified aluminium balcony components, has recently been approved by EPD Hub, in recognition of the status of its Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

The company, which employs 92 people at its Medway City Estate factory and head office in Rochester, designs and manufactures fire-rated decking, balustrades, drainage systems, cladding and balcony components for high-rise, new build or remediation projects.

The EPD confirms  AliDeck’s embodied carbon performance is up to 17% better than the industry average – making them the industry-leader in verified low carbon aluminium.

The success in securing an EPD adds to AliDecks existing raft of accreditations. It now gives AliDeck a competitive advantage as it can back-up its lifecycle claims by being able to independently verify the quality of its raw materials, production, use and disposal.

Richard Izzard, Managing Director of AliDeck, said: “We have always known our commitment to designing, sourcing and manufacturing in the UK made a difference, now we can prove it thanks to our EPD verification.

“The EPD gives certainty for specifiers that our products will meet their BREEAM and other sustainability targets; it gives reassurance to contractors that our products are certified to meet strict planning and performance regulations; and it enables developers to confidently shout about their commitment to sustainability for stakeholders.”

AliDeck’s EPDs were independently audited by Blue Marble, with the full report published on the EPD Hub. The key metric for comparing EPDs is the normalised Global Warming Potential (GWP), measured in kg of CO₂ equivalent per kg of product (kg CO₂e/kg).

For AliDeck’s 20mm aluminium board, the normalised GWP is 5.6, while the competitor’s best board is 6.5. When it comes to CO₂, lower is better.

Richard added: “Our market-leading results are the outcome of years of commitment to sustainable principles, and we are very pleased to see this so clearly confirmed for all to see on the EPD Hub.”

The EPD was achieved in part because all AliDeck aluminium products are 100% recyclable and made from 67% recycled material – a figure which is constantly increasing. Precision engineering and design also optimising material usage, reducing waste and extending product lifespan, and with every aspect of the production process closely scrutinised to adhere to rigorous UKCA/CE compliance for full traceability.
