National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) student, Ali Alperen Bakır has been researching, ‘Structural Integrity Assessment of Cold Spray Repaired High-Strength Aluminium 7075 Specimens,’ which could reduce costs, maintenance time, and the environmental impact of the aerospace industry. The significant research into using cold spray as a repair technique could solve the problem of repairing high-strength aluminium components, while ensuring the mechanical performance of components. Due to the high strength-to-weight ratio and durability, Aluminium Alloy AA7075 is widely used in the aerospace industry, especially for wing skins, but these components can become damaged over time as a result of cyclic loading and corrosion. Repairing these parts can be challenging as the material’s sensitivity to temperature and oxidation means that high temperature processes are not viable. However, cold spray could prove to be the perfect solution.
