Did you attend last year’s House of Lords Lunch?
Hosted by Lord Rupert Redesdale, the annual Aluminium Federation (ALFED) House of Lords Lunch is set to return to Westminster, London on Thursday 20th June 2024. Discussing the key theme of building an industrial strategy for the UK aluminium sector, delegates can expect to hear from engaging industry speakers regarding why this is vital for driving the industry forwards.
With a general election looming later on this year, key elements that the majority of the UK manufacturing sector believe the country needs is more political stability and a comprehensive industrial strategy.
The aluminium sector is a vital contributor to the UK economy, supporting the employment of more than 100,000 full-time jobs and contributing almost £8 Billion in GVA annually. However, to ensure its continued success and competitiveness, the sector requires a clear and robust industrial strategy.
An industrial strategy tailored to the unique needs of the UK aluminium sector is paramount for several reasons:
- Maximising Economic Potential: A coordinated industrial strategy will enable the sector to maximise its economic potential, driving growth, innovation, and productivity.
- Supporting Employment: A strategic approach to industry development will safeguard and create jobs, ensuring the continued prosperity of communities reliant on the aluminium sector.
- Enhancing Competitiveness: By addressing key challenges and capitalising on emerging opportunities, an industrial strategy will enhance the competitiveness of the UK aluminium industry on the global stage.
- Promoting Sustainability: An integrated approach to sustainability within the industrial strategy will facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy, aligning with the UK’s environmental objectives.
ALFED CEO, Tom Jones has commented on the need for a UK industrial strategy: “The UK’s economy is in a state of chaos because of little or no clear industrial strategic plan to develop UK manufacturing into a global leader. To summarise, a successful long-term executed strategy would create wealth, tax revenue, job creation, and growth!”
Do you agree with the opinions in favour of the aluminium industry’s need for an industrial strategy? Are there any specific actions you believe need to be taken by the next UK government to drive the sector forwards?
Come and join us at the House of Lords for a 3-course meal and engage in an insightful debate regarding why a strategy is needed. With the registration, welcome drinks and networking starting from 12.15pm, lunch commencing at 1.00pm, and the event close at precisely 2.30pm, this prepares for a short, precise meeting aiming to help the UK aluminium industry come together and form a clear strategic direction that will positively benefit the sector in the future.
