The ALFED Defence Report, produced by the Aluminium Federation (ALFED), outlines the strategic importance of aluminium to UK defence capability, resilience and readiness. It argues that aluminium, lightweight, strong, corrosion-resistant, and endlessly recyclable, is essential across air, sea, and land systems, underpinning platforms from aircraft and naval vessels to communications and infrastructure.
Following DSEI 2025 and in anticipation of the UK’s updated Critical Minerals Strategy, the report calls for turning recognition into delivery through concrete measures: ensuring predictable, affordable energy for producers; conducting a Defence Aluminium Capability Audit to map and close supply chain gaps; investing in circular recycling infrastructure; and adjusting procurement to reward UK-sourced, low-carbon materials. Citing NATO and EU classifications of aluminium as a defence-critical raw material, the report warns of supply chain risks due to global concentration in China and Russia, but identifies major opportunities for the UK to build sovereign, low-carbon aluminium capacity that strengthens national security and industrial growth.
