In May 2022, the ethical scrap metal merchant Alchemy Metals are transitioning their fleet of 24 vehicles from diesel to HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil).
HVO fuel is one of the cleanest fuels on the market. It is a second-generation, synthetic, advanced renewable diesel alternative that
eliminates up to 90% of net CO2 and significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.
As a paraffinic, renewable fuel, HVO will be used as a drop-in alternative to fossil diesel throughout the Alchemy fleet of Euro 6 Scania skip, RORO, flat bed and artic lorries, as well as throughout their forklift fleet.
HVO is synthesized from vegetable oils or animal fats using a specialist hydro-treatment process – its purity will allow Alchemy to significantly reduce their harmful emissions.
Philip Newman, Managing Director commented “HVO fuel is significantly better for the environment compared to mineral diesel and is key in helping Alchemy achieve its net-zero carbon target. As a family run business we have a clear vision of how the future looks and our environmental impact is top of the list. The climate crisis is happening now and we strongly feel that we do not have time to wait for electric vehicles in the haulage sector, this switch to HVO affords us an immediate solution”.
