Martin Giles, HM Inspector of Health and Safety, delivered a comprehensive update on the latest developments in UK health and safety law. He highlighted key areas of focus for the aluminium industry, including musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), noise health surveillance, and managing hazardous substances. Giles underscored the importance of engaging with HSE proactively and being prepared for inspections by maintaining robust documentation and showcasing positive health and safety practices.

Martin also discussed recent inspection trends, revealing that companies failing to demonstrate active engagement in safety measures were more likely to face enforcement action. He advised businesses to prioritise transparency and collaboration during inspections, framing these as opportunities to improve.

Leadership in Health and Safety

The session on “Leading Safely” by George Bain, presented by industry experts, highlighted the importance of leadership in fostering a positive safety culture. Attendees learned about the role of senior leaders in setting expectations, modelling safe behaviours, and empowering employees to take ownership of health and safety practices.

Key takeaways from this session included:

  • Visible Leadership: Leaders who actively engage in health and safety initiatives inspire accountability across all levels of the organisation.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Open lines of communication help identify risks early and encourage a culture of trust.
  • Continuous Improvement: Organisations must regularly assess and adapt their health and safety strategies to address emerging challenges.

Fire Safety in Aluminium Operations

The Fire Safety in Aluminium Operations session addressed one of the most critical concerns in the industry. Drawing from real-world examples, the presentation outlined the risks associated with molten aluminium, flammable materials, and poor housekeeping practices.

Key insights included:

  • Fire Risk Assessments: Regular reviews of fire safety protocols are essential to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Fire Suppression Systems: Investing in modern fire suppression systems can significantly reduce the impact of fire incidents.
  • Training and Preparedness: Employee training on emergency response procedures and fire prevention is vital to ensuring a safe working environment.

Technological Advancements and Safety

Attendees were introduced to advancements in robotics and automation, showcasing how these technologies are reducing human exposure to high-risk tasks. Presentations highlighted the potential of robotic systems in handling hazardous materials, conducting quality checks, and performing maintenance in dangerous environments.

Examples of successful implementation included:

  • Automated systems for molten metal transfer to reduce the risk of burns.
  • Robotics in quality inspection, ensuring consistency while minimising human error.

The forum also addressed lockout-tagout (LOTOTO) procedures, emphasising their role in preventing equipment-related injuries during maintenance and repair tasks.

Sharing Key Trends: ALFED’s HSE Injury Data Report

A central part of the forum was the presentation of ALFED’s 2023 HSE Injury Data Report, compiled from 11 member companies. The data revealed significant trends and areas for improvement.

  • Injury Breakdown: A total of 71 incidents were reported in 2023, including 7 severe injuries (Category A). Injuries to hands and fingers accounted for the majority (39 cases), followed by head and neck injuries (23 cases).
  • Common Causes: Slips, trips, and falls remained the leading causes of injuries, alongside ergonomic issues and burns from hot materials.
  • Near-Miss Reporting: A positive development was the significant increase in near-miss reporting, with 1,699 cases logged in 2024, reflecting heightened awareness and proactive hazard identification.

The data emphasised the need for targeted interventions, such as improving ergonomic workstations, introducing anti-slip measures, and enhancing training on handling molten materials safely.

Interactive Panels and Networking

One of the highlights of the day was the interactive panel discussion titled “When an Inspector Calls.” This session provided practical insights into managing HSE inspections, with participants sharing their experiences and strategies for compliance.

The event also offered excellent networking opportunities, allowing members to connect over shared challenges and best practices. Attendees discussed their experiences with safety innovations, regulatory changes, and effective employee engagement strategies.

  • Expanding fire safety training and resources.
  • Enhancing leadership training to build a culture of accountability and proactive risk management.

The feedback gathered during the forum will guide ALFED’s efforts in creating targeted support and resources for members in the coming year.

A Platform for Connection and Growth

The ALFED HSE Forum exemplified the Federation’s dedication to empowering its members with actionable insights and fostering a collaborative approach to health and safety. By addressing shared challenges, leveraging expertise, and setting clear priorities for the future, the aluminium sector is better positioned to enhance workplace safety and employee well-being.

Supporting Mental Health Charities and Foundations

We were also joined by two special guests from The Frank Bruno Foundation, giving them the opportunity to meet the ALFED team, network with ALFED members, and promote some of the fantastic work they do on a daily basis in providing non-contact boxing programmes for children and adults across Northamptonshire who need the mental health support. The Frank Bruno Foundation are also the official charity of this year’s ALFED Annual Dinner, so to donate in advance of the dinner on the 28th November, please visit: justgiving.com/page/aluminium-federation-frank-bruno-foundation
