Dissimilar Joining of Steel to Aluminium for Automotive Use Statistics show that the transportation sector is the largest global contributor of greenhouse gas emissions and new regulations impose strict limits for greenhouse gas emission on new cars. While new powertrains and alternative energy sources are being developed, vehicle lightweighting is considered to be the most appropriate short-term solution to reducing greenhouse gas emission. Aluminium is one of the materials that provides improvements in strength-to-weight ratios. This has led to questions around which methods for joining aluminium to steel in car body applications provide the required properties at cost. A detailed review and practical trials were performed to investigate dissimilar joining of steel to aluminium for automotive applications.
