The Aluminium Federation (ALFED) is calling on the UK aluminium industry and the wider metals community, to unite and take part in a landmark Sustainability Strategy Day on Thursday 5th June 2025, hosted at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon.

This pivotal event will bring together manufacturers, recyclers, policymakers, and innovation leaders to align around a shared vision for aluminium’s future. As global competition intensifies, energy and trade policy tightens, and decarbonisation becomes an economic imperative, the Strategy Day will serve as a critical forum for coordinated action.
“There’s never been a more important time to come together as a sector,” said Nadine Bloxsome, CEO of ALFED. “The Sustainability Strategy Day is about ensuring aluminium – as one of the world’s most critical materials – has the strategic recognition, investment, and policy alignment it needs to thrive in the UK.”
Driving Strategic Collaboration
The event is a key milestone in the roll-out of the UK Aluminium Alliance – a cross-sector framework led by ALFED and developed in partnership with industry stakeholders. It builds on momentum from the Back British Metals campaign, launched in Parliament in April 2025, and aligns with wider calls for metals to be treated as strategic assets within the UK’s industrial and critical minerals strategies.
The Alliance will focus on enabling a national aluminium strategy, covering four key pillars:
- Industrial strategy & policy engagement
- Recycling and circular economy infrastructure
- Skills and capability mapping
- Data and digital infrastructure
ALFED’s Sustainability Strategy Day will set the direction for each of these areas, providing a launchpad for targeted working groups, cross-sector collaboration, and direct engagement with Government departments and national policymakers.

An Unmissable Agenda
From CBAM and carbon pricing, to critical minerals, industrial strategy, and innovation, the day’s packed agenda features high-profile speakers and panel discussions. Delegates will hear directly from:
- Dr Mark Jones, Director, CONETZ – unveiling the UK Aluminium Strategy Framework
- Jon Bolton, Co-Chair, Steel Council – sharing lessons from the steel sector on building coordinated Government partnerships
- James Herbert and Brent Mahoney, ALTEK – on salt slag and dross recovery
- Ewelina Pieckowska, Chair, ALFED Trade Committee – discussing trade, ETS, and aluminium’s criticality
- And many more industry leaders from Novelis, Hydro Wrexham, EMR, Alupro, Bridgnorth Aluminium, BCAST, AMRC and others
In a unique moment for the sector, attendees will also experience the premiere of “The Element of Choice” – a new ALFED-produced film showcasing aluminium’s essential role in building a more sustainable, secure, and competitive UK economy.
Why It Matters
Aluminium is a foundation material for transport, defence, packaging, aerospace, energy and infrastructure. Yet, the UK continues to export millions of tonnes of high-quality aluminium scrap annually due to insufficient domestic recycling and remelting infrastructure.
The Strategy Day will tackle this issue head-on, focusing on ways to retain value within the UK supply chain, boost investment in domestic capability, and ensure aluminium plays a leading role in the UK’s drive for net zero and economic resilience.
Join Us – Be Part of the Strategy
ALFED invites all members and wider industry contacts, including OEMs, SMEs, policy professionals, and academics, to join this essential forum.
