Recent events, including the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak’s recent announcement to backtrack on many of the UK government’s net zero policies means that sustainability is a hot topic in the news. Particularly in the aluminium industry with the ongoing debate regarding its role in the circular economy and the potential need for an industrial strategy in the sector.

In response to recent events, and over the course of the year, ALFED members, Novelis have now released their 2023 sustainability report based on scaling circularity.

Emphasising that they have set ambitious targets aimed at creating a positive impact on both people and the planet, the main aim of their annual sustainability report is to address the progress they have made towards each of their goals.

Thanks to a considerable number of contributors, they are making significant strides towards their overall goal of becoming the world’s leading provider of low-carbon, sustainable aluminium solutions that advance us towards a circular economy.

To summarise, in FY2023 they:

  • Achieved zero SIFs across their operations
  • Reduced their absolute carbon emissions by 14% from their 2016 baseline
  • Achieved 61% recycled content in their products (which is the global average)
  • Recycled more than 82 billion used beverage cans
  • Reduced waste to landfill intensity by 10%

Novelis progressed in many areas in comparison to last year, however they lost ground on several key environmental and social metrics. They were challenged on the areas of water and energy intensity, and still have considerable work to do in improving female representation in leadership, technical and operational roles.

Emilio Braghi, Executive Vice-President, and President of Novelis Europe, commented: “Aluminium is a strategic raw material for the transition to a green and decarbonised future in mobility, clean technology, renewables and more. By scaling circularity, we can effectively reduce our own carbon emissions and contribute to decarbonizing the entire aluminium value chain”.
