The UK Government has released its Industrial Strategy Green Paper: Invest 2035 – The UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy, and the consultation deadline is fast approaching on 24th November.

This strategy sets out a roadmap for the next decade, shaping key areas like energy policy, innovation, trade, and skills development – all of which have a profound impact on the aluminium sector.

We are at a critical juncture for our industry. It is essential that we, as ALFED members, contribute to this consultation to ensure the voices of aluminium producers, processors, finishers, and suppliers are heard. The final strategy will influence government priorities, investments, and regulatory frameworks that will directly affect our sector.

Why Your Contribution Matters

A strong, collective response from the aluminium industry will help secure:

  • Energy Pricing Solutions: Addressing challenges for energy-intensive industries to ensure competitiveness and affordability.
  • Net Zero Goals: Promoting aluminium as a critical material for sustainable infrastructure and energy transition.
  • Trade Policy Alignment: Shaping international trade agreements to benefit UK aluminium exporters and importers.
  • Workforce Development: Ensuring targeted investments in skills and innovation to future-proof the aluminium sector.

Your input will strengthen ALFED’s collective response, helping to amplify our sector’s needs and priorities.

Key Points from ALFED’s Draft Response

ALFED is preparing a detailed submission, but your insights are vital to ensure it reflects the diverse perspectives of our members.

Some key themes we are focusing on include:

  • Energy Policy: Calling for the establishment of an Industrial Energy Taskforce to deliver predictable and fair energy pricing.
  • Recycling Infrastructure: Advocating for expanded investment to support the circular economy and decarbonise aluminium production.
  • Trade: Highlighting the need for stronger trade agreements and measures to mitigate risks from trade barriers or tariffs.
  • Skills and Innovation: Emphasising funding for apprenticeships and R&D to develop a workforce and technologies fit for the future.

We welcome your feedback on these points or any additional issues you believe ALFED should address in the collective response.

How to Contribute

The consultation survey can be accessed here: Take the Survey.
You do not need to answer all the questions – submitting responses to just a few key areas is sufficient to make an impact.

Details of the strategy can be found here: Industrial Strategy Green Paper.

Please share your thoughts on the draft response or suggest any additional points ALFED should include by emailing alfed@alfed.org.uk

Act Now

The consultation deadline is 24th November, so there is limited time to ensure our industry’s priorities are heard. Let’s make sure the aluminium sector plays a central role in shaping the UK’s industrial future.
