On Friday 15th March, organised in association with the Aluminium Federation (ALFED), members JBM International Ltd (JBMI) welcomed CarbonChain for a site visit around their Staffordshire facility.

JBMI have over 40 years’ experience in the aluminium ingot manufacturing and dross recycling industry. Through technological advancement in the production of aluminium alloys and light-weighting, their future through the development of aluminium products is their greatest advantage. Their dynamic set up provides the flexibility to supply customers with bespoke aluminium alloy products for an unlimited range of applications. They can supply the full range of global aluminium specifications for your metal requirements.

CarbonChain, who recently joined ALFED as supplier members, aim to transition the world’s supply chain to a net zero economy by empowering climate-critical sectors to take data-driven action. They provide end-to-end visibility into the carbon footprint of aluminium supply chains. The AI-powered carbon accounting platform enables manufacturers, traders and their banks to measure, report and lower their emissions, so they can retain market share and prepare for new and changing regulations.

In an effort to offer the CarbonChain team an insight into the real world of aluminium, ALFED were asked to facilitate a site visit that highlighted the important role that secondary aluminium plays in the decarbonisation and JBMI were happy to oblige.

The CarbonChain team travelled from London to sunny Staffordshire at midday last Friday, where they were welcomed by JBMI Director, Josh Brough and the team, along with ALFED Membership and Sustainability Manager, Nadine Bloxsome, for a VIP tour around JBMI’s facility. The tour was well in demand by the CarbonChain team, who said that it would really benefit them in their bid to connecting with and helping ALFED members if they saw their operations and processes in action… and JBMI were happy to show them what a day in the life of a company at the heart of the aluminium ingot manufacturing and dross recycling industry looks like!

Speaking on the visit, CarbonChain Customer Success Manager, Rumi Jahani, commented: “It was enlightening for CarbonChain to visit the facilities of JBMI, a fellow ALFED member. Secondary Aluminium plays a vital role in the aluminum industry’s decarbonization, and learning about the sheer range of JBMI’s partnerships for sourcing scrap from different types of suppliers was impressive. Their advanced production process addresses precision challenges that we hear many secondary manufacturers face. Among other examples of their pioneering work is a treatment plant that converts waste byproducts into  saleable  alternative products, while their experiences with OEMs requesting carbon data of ingots and other products confirms the growing trend we’re seeing in the industry.”

From JBMI’s perspective, Josh Brough also commented:  ‘’JBMI were pleased to host ALFED and Carbon Chain around JBMI’s recently upgraded manufacturing facility. As carbon has become an integral part of the sustainable procurement of aluminium alloys globally, it was important to highlight the evident carbon saving that Secondary Aluminium Alloy Ingot manufacturing can achieve, compared to higher energy intensive Primary Aluminium facilities. CBAM has become a hot topic in our industry and Carbon Chain have assisted in the complexities of navigating total carbon modelling to support the import and export of qualifying aluminium products ahead of the UK’s deadline to meet the stringent European requirements.’’
