ALFED calls for action to help the manufacturing sector realise its full potential - The Aluminium Federation

To celebrate National Manufacturing Day (28 September), ALFED – the Aluminium Federation – is echoing the calls of organiser Make UK by encouraging the supply chain to break down barriers, tackle the skills gap and open doors for future generations.

After all, while the sector remains a significant contributor to the UK economy, insight from BDO’s latest Regional Manufacturing Outlook report[1] suggests that it is failing to capitalise on widespread opportunities, resulting in an estimated loss of £6.5bn in revenue every year.

Tom Jones, CEO of ALFED, said: “As with many industries, manufacturing continues to face a significant skills gap, as well dated misconceptions and an ageing workforce. Tackling these barriers to growth head-on by celebrating the diversity of a truly fascinating sector, showcasing the range of highly skilled jobs on offer and shouting about the amazing opportunities for career development is essential to help manufacturing realise its full potential.

“In-line with National Manufacturing Day, we’re calling for businesses to throw open their doors to the workforce of tomorrow and be far more vocal about what a career in manufacturing can truly offer. The UK is renowned for its manufacturing prowess. It’s a thriving, vibrant sector and continuing this legacy must be a key priority.”
