The UK Government has announced further details of its Critical Minerals Programme, including the launch of the Critical Minerals Accelerator, a £25 million grant funding programme designed to help scale up innovative critical minerals projects across the UK.
The programme forms part of the Government’s wider Critical Minerals Strategy and aims to strengthen domestic supply chains, improve economic resilience and support industrial growth by accelerating commercialisation and investment across strategically important materials.
Why this matters for the aluminium industry
The launch of the programme is particularly significant following the Government’s recognition of aluminium as a critical and growth material, acknowledging its importance to the UK’s economic security, industrial competitiveness and transition to net zero.
As a lightweight, infinitely recyclable material, aluminium underpins many of the UK’s priority sectors, including:
- Defence
- Aerospace
- Automotive
- Construction
- Packaging
- Renewable energy
- Infrastructure and advanced manufacturing
The new programme represents another positive step towards strengthening domestic capability, encouraging investment and improving supply chain resilience across these strategically important industries.
What is the Critical Minerals Accelerator?
The £25 million Critical Minerals Accelerator will support collaborative projects that are approaching commercial scale across the critical minerals value chain.
Funding is expected to support projects involving:
- Processing and refining
- Recycling and circular economy technologies
- Midstream manufacturing
- Pilot and demonstration facilities
- Innovative technologies capable of scaling to commercial deployment
The programme is intended to unlock private investment and accelerate the growth of UK capability in critical and growth materials.
Wider Critical Minerals Programme
Alongside the Accelerator, Government has also announced two complementary initiatives:
- Magnet Hub – A national centre of excellence supporting rare earth magnet manufacturing, recycling, innovation and skills.
- Demand Aggregation Platform – A new initiative designed to better understand UK industry demand, encourage strategic offtake agreements and unlock further investment across critical material supply chains.
Together, these initiatives aim to strengthen domestic production, support regional growth, create high-value manufacturing jobs and improve the resilience of UK supply chains.
Funding Timescales
The Critical Minerals Accelerator will operate through a two-stage competitive application process, with the first competition opening during 2026 and further opportunities expected to follow.
Successful projects will receive support through to 2030, helping innovative businesses bridge the gap between demonstration and commercial deployment.
