A dedicated AINOX solution for recovering valuable metals from aluminum salt slag fines.

In secondary aluminum smelting, salt slag is one of the most challenging residues to process mechanically. After crushing, grinding and classification, the fine fraction can still contain recoverable metallic aluminum and other valuable metals. However, fine particle size, high salt content, corrosive behaviour and abrasive dust make separation particularly demanding.

In fractions below 2 mm, metal particles are small, irregular and often difficult to liberate and recover efficiently. Residual ferrous particles can affect the performance of downstream separation equipment, while fine aluminum and other non-ferrous metals may remain in the reject fraction if the line is not designed specifically for this application.

For aluminum smelters and salt slag processors, this means a direct loss of recoverable metal and a lower value of the material sent back to remelting or further treatment.

SGM has developed the Salt Slag Fines Recovery Line for the treatment of ground aluminum salt slag fines.

The line combines SGM DSRP dynamic magnetic separators and SGM VIS-EF high-frequency eddy current separators, configured according to particle size distribution, ferrous metal content, non-ferrous metal content, throughput and recovery targets. The DSRP stage is designed to remove residual fine ferrous particles that can reduce the efficiency and stability of downstream separation. The VIS-EF stage is dedicated to the recovery of fine metallic aluminum and other non-ferrous metal particles from small-size fractions.

For aggressive operating conditions, SGM can supply the equipment in AINOX execution, with AISI 316 stainless steel construction on the parts exposed to the material, excluding specific ECS components. This execution is designed to support long-term reliability when processing corrosive salt slag and abrasive fines.

The same engineering approach can also be applied to other fine fractions with valuable metal content, including ASR fines, post-fluff and fine Zorba, where small metal particles are still present but difficult to recover with conventional separation layouts.

SGM supports aluminum smelters, salt slag processors and metal recyclers with application-specific separation solutions, from material testing and process definition to complete line engineering, commissioning and after-sales service.
