With the United States confirming new blanket tariffs on UK aluminium, automotive, and steel exports – including a 25% duty on aluminium – the need for coordinated action and a unified industry voice has never been more urgent.

The Aluminium Federation (ALFED) is calling on businesses across the UK aluminium value chain to take part in its industry-wide survey to help shape the future of the sector at a critical turning point. Originally launched to support the development of the UK Aluminium Strategy, the survey has now taken on renewed importance as trade pressures escalate and the global landscape shifts rapidly.
“The introduction of new US tariffs puts immediate pressure on UK manufacturers,” said Nadine Bloxsome, CEO of ALFED. “Combined with high energy prices, growing export barriers, and increased uncertainty around scrap exports and supply chain stability, we need to understand exactly where the stress points are, and where targeted government support and policy alignment is most needed.”
The survey is open to all businesses connected to the UK aluminium industry, from producers and processors to distributors, fabricators, recyclers, and end-users. It is designed to capture real-time data and insight into the sector’s current challenges, future investment priorities, and opportunities for growth in key markets such as defence, construction, aerospace, automotive and clean energy.
Why it matters now:
- Trade disruption: New tariffs threaten export volumes and disrupt decades of integrated supply chains.
- Competitiveness at risk: UK energy costs and fragmented policy responses risk pushing operations overseas.
- Domestic capacity needs safeguarding: The UK must strengthen closed-loop systems and retain high-value materials for its own industrial base.
- Policy opportunity: ALFED is working closely with Government through the UK Aluminium Alliance to ensure the sector is recognised as strategic, but we need the data to make that case strongly and credibly.
Your insight is essential. This survey is your opportunity to help shape the aluminium sector’s policy priorities, investment roadmap, and national voice — particularly at a time when strategic resilience and economic security are under threat.
