Aerosols: Beiersdorf and Nussbaum to launch 100% recycled aluminium cans - The Aluminium FederationThe German group has partnered with Swiss packaging specialist Nussbaum to produce aerosol cans made entirely from post-consumer recycled aluminium. Produced entirely out of used beverage cans, the innovative aerosol packaging required a year of development.

The first Beiersdorf products in aerosol cans made from 100 percent recycled aluminium will be rolled out in the market as early as at the end of 2021.

“The great thing about this technology is that it is the first that does not use any primary aluminium, instead it is using aluminium waste from beverage cans,” says Markus Tomasini, CTO of Nussbaum Matzingen AG. The new technology thus opens a new chapter towards a more circular economy in the persona care industry.

All of the aluminium beverage cans used as raw material are sourced regionally in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, guaranteeing short material routes.

Recycled aluminium requires up to 95 percent less energy to be processed and the light metal does not forfeit any of its quality during the recycling process.

“With our pioneering partnership with Nussbaum, we are triggering a cross-industry rethink all along the value chain and are reducing our carbon footprint relating to aerosol cans by up to 90 percent,” says Norbert Menzel, Principal for Packaging Technology at Beiersdorf.
