ALFED launches 'Aluminium for Engineers'

Engineers are being offered a new workshop to boost their knowledge of working with aluminium. The use of this metal has grown significantly in recent years, especially in the automotive industry, where lightweighting is a priority for many companies.

The Aluminium Federation has developed an intensive two-day technical workshop,  Aluminium for Engineers, which gives participants practical understanding of aluminium production, processing and engineering applications.

“For many engineers, aluminium is a relatively unknown material,” said technical manager Jan Lukaszewski. “We are responding to requests from a range of companies for the Aluminium Federation to provide a technical introduction to working with aluminium for their engineers and technologists. I understand this personally, having worked for many years in the steel sector, and I had a rapid learning curve when I joined the Aluminium Federation two years ago.”

Aluminium for Engineers will be held on 4-5 October 2017 at the National Metalforming Centre in West Bromwich.

The workshop is designed for individuals with a reasonable level of technical, engineering or metallurgy understanding, but not necessarily experienced in working with aluminium. Aluminium for Engineers is suitable for both new and more experienced employees, depending on their background, qualifications and experience. It is open to members and non-members of the Aluminium Federation.

The main areas covered by the workshop are:

• The theory of metals and the metallurgy of aluminium
• Primary and secondary aluminium production
• Aluminium specification and the heat treatment of aluminium
• Working with aluminium: extruding; rolling; forging; casting, pressing
• Wrought processing and techniques for joining aluminium
• Mechanical and non-destructive testing
• Corrosion, coating and protection of aluminium.
